Define mushroom. Write the common steps of mushroom production.

A mushroom is a fungal fruiting body that typically grows above ground on soil or on its food source.

Common steps of mushroom production include:

1. Substrate preparation: Selecting and preparing a suitable substrate, such as composted manure, straw, or sawdust, which provides nutrients for mushroom growth.
2.  Inoculation: Introducing mushroom spawn, which is a mixture of mycelium (the vegetative part of the fungus) and substrate, into the prepared substrate. This is typically done by mixing spawn into the substrate or placing spawn in layers within the substrate.
3. Incubation: Allowing the inoculated substrate to incubate in a controlled environment with optimal temperature and humidity conditions for mycelial growth. This stage allows the mycelium to colonize the substrate.
4. Casing (optional): Some mushroom varieties require a casing layer, which is a non-nutritive layer (e.g., peat moss or vermiculite) applied on top of the colonized substrate to provide a microclimate conducive to fruiting.
5. Fruiting: Manipulating environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light) to induce the formation of mushroom fruiting bodies from the colonized substrate. This stage requires careful monitoring and adjustment of conditions to promote healthy fruiting.
6. Harvesting: Harvesting mature mushrooms by carefully picking or cutting them from the substrate. Harvesting timing is crucial to ensure optimal flavor, texture, and shelf life of the mushrooms.
7.  Post-harvest handling: Sorting, cleaning, and packaging harvested mushrooms for distribution and sale. Proper handling and storage are essential to maintain quality and extend shelf life.
